The "Thousand Islands Antique Boat Museum Trust" was created in 1993 as the incubator for an eventual Museum. It provided an entity that could receive donations that it set aside in preparation for the eventual creation of an actual Museum. In 2014, an agreement to lease the Water Street facility from the Town of Gananoque meant that an actual Museum was then possible. The "Thousand Islands Boat Museum" was then incorporated under the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act. The Trust and the corporation have since been amalgamated into a single not-for-profit, Registered Charity, making the "Thousand Islands Boat Museum" its legal and operating name.
The Thousand Islands Antique Boat Museum Trust (TIABMT) is a registered Canadian charity. It was established in 1993 to preserve the nautical heritage unique to this area of the St. Lawrence River. The goal of the Trust, through its not-for-profit and charitable status was to eventually convert to a true Museum that acquires, maintains, restores and preserves watercraft, documents and cultural history, for viewing and educational purposes. In 2014, the Trust had accumulated the necessary momentum and resources to establish the Thousand Islands Boat Museum (TIBM), and secured an exceptional waterfront site for the Museum venture. This presented a new vision for the Gananoque waterfront – a vision that creates an engaging cultural attraction for residents and visitors. Approved by Revenue Canada - August 17, 1993
The Thousand Islands Boat Museum brings the heritage of the St. Lawrence River, the 1000 Islands, and the magic spirit of the region to life. To fulfill its mission, the Thousand Islands Boat Museum develops and expands innovative year-round programming that engages and stimulates the community. In short, the Museum continues to develop a dynamic cultural center where local history comes alive through direct experience, and where the heritage of the river is fostered. Culture is born out of human interaction; it therefore cannot exist without people around to enjoy, contribute, evaluate, and participate in it. By creating a dynamic cultural space, the stories of the river, and communication between visitors is promoted. The fascinating history of the area is awakened and history is made!
